Are you interested in a FREE reading screener and also participating in ongoing research to help Stanford create an in-depth assessment tool that goes beyond the word level? This is an email to survey what level of interest families have in participating in the reading screener portion and the current research portions of a reading assessment. This is not just for those with reading struggles, but is appropriate for ANY student. There is no limit to how many students you would like tested. Details are as follows.

Secret Garden has the opportunity to partner with Stanford’s ROAR to receive free reading testing in exchange for participation on ongoing research on the cognitive performance portion of the test that is currently being developed. Once this portion of the test is developed, it will enable parents and schools to see a far more informative profile of student reading abilities and what underlying cognitive deficits may be contributing to reading struggles. We are so excited this is being developed and wanted to invite you to participate in this ongoing research with us. Only partners have access to testing currently.

All testing is remote and does not require any teacher administration. Your student only needs to log on to the ROAR platform to complete the test at home.

The first part of each test is a FREE reading screener that assesses what percentile your student is in for his/her grade level. It measures phonics, phoneme, letter, word, sentence and passage reading abilities. This would go into a bit more granular detail to help you determine what part of reading is a challenge, if there are reading struggles. This portion comes with score reports.

The second part of each test is currently in the research phase to help creators build out a far better reading test for future students. The core components of the secondary part of each test is assessing things like visual processing speed, working memory, executive function and other tasks. This portion is part of a voluntary participation in the research and does not yet come with a score report.

ONLY those who are willing to participate in the second portion of the tests will be able to receive the first portion, which is the free reading assessment.

Having just begun my doctoral studies at Baylor University and learning more about ongoing research in education, this is a amazing opportunity for you to help the Stanford reading research team create a test that assesses far more than just word reading and that can hopefully go to the heart of why specific students are struggling with reading. If you are willing to participate, your student's scores could significantly help with the ongoing studies on these other core skills needed for effective reading.

Student demographic information will be shared with Stanford along with student scores. That information includes: student name, DOB, school (or homeschool), home language, race, ethnicity, gender and whether a student has a diagnosis. However, please understand that there are strict ethical codes that universities are required to follow about data security and student privacy. Stanford is ONLY allowed to share de-identified information with the public (in the form of the norms they create, which is basically like an average of all tests they have assessed).
